How eChecks Work (for Paying Customers)

An eCheck is an electronic check or a direct debit from your bank account. They’re often used for online purchases. Electronic checks are sometimes referred to as ACH (Automated Clearing House) transfers.

An eCheck is a lot like any other type of check transfer. When you use an eCheck to purchase something online, your bank will have the money electronically transferred to the store’s checking account within 24 hours.

The only difference is that it’s done electronically rather than via paper check. There are many pros to using eChecks instead of paper checks—the biggest being convenience!

eCheck Payment: What are the Requirements?

To pay with an eCheck, you will require the following:

  1. The merchant’s name, address and telephone number.
  2. A routing number for the U.S.A. or Canada (this is a nine-digit number that can be found on your check or bank statement).
  3. The account number of the checking account you want to use when making the payment.
  4. Your name as it appears on your checking account.
  5. Your bank’s name and address. This can be found on your check or statement.
  6. The amount that you want to pay and any special instructions.

Once you have all these details, fill out the necessary information on the website’s checkout page and proceed to checkout as usual.

How are eChecks Processed?

An eCheck, or electronic check, is similar to a paper check. The only difference is that it is processed electronically by a bank instead of being written and mailed.

If you are using an electronic funds transfer, the item will be processed once your bank has received the information. This usually takes one to three business days, and the funds will then be deducted from your account. If you use an eCheck through PayPal, this is done as soon as you make the payment.

Like with a paper check, there are several different echecks with varying degrees of security. One type requires you to enter your bank account number and routing number on the seller’s site. Another type requires you to write in your account and routing numbers. It is up to you to verify that the seller’s information matches yours before completing your purchase.

Last Words

eChecks are a safe and convenient way to pay for products online, especially if you don’t have a credit card. It is also more affordable because you send payments for free.
